Single role or genuine dual role?
Nanny vs nanny-housekeeper
Choose a nanny when childcare must remain the clear priority. Choose a nanny-housekeeper only when the weekly schedule leaves realistic time for both childcare and agreed household work.
The decision is not “more help” versus “less help”. It is whether the second responsibility can genuinely fit.
Childcare drives the day.
The children, their routines and child-related duties remain the primary responsibility. Some child-related meals, laundry and tidying can sit inside the role without turning it into full household management.
Childcare and household work both have protected time.
The position includes genuine childcare plus clearly defined household duties such as cleaning, laundry, ironing, cooking or organisation. The schedule must show when each responsibility can realistically happen.
What changes when housekeeping becomes part of the job?
A combined title should change the written brief, not simply add a longer task list.
Childcare takes priority whenever the children need active care.
The household states which responsibility leads at each part of the day and how conflicts are handled.
Usually child-related practical work: children’s meals, laundry, bedrooms, belongings and agreed tidying.
Can include broader household cleaning, family laundry, ironing, cooking, organisation and other agreed domestic tasks.
The timetable follows care needs, school or nursery, activities and parental cover.
The timetable must also contain predictable periods in which household work can be completed without compromising childcare.
Watch for household duties quietly expanding until childcare is no longer the clear priority.
Watch for two full workloads being compressed into the same hours.
How do your children’s ages affect the fit?
Age is not a job title, but it changes how much uninterrupted time is realistically available for household work. Number of children, school holidays, routines and individual care needs matter too.
| Family stage | Workload reality | Useful starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Baby or toddler | Direct supervision, meals, naps, changing, outings and settling can consume much of the working day. | Start nanny-led unless the household duties are deliberately limited or another adult creates reliable household-work time. |
| Nursery or school age | Regular nursery or school blocks can create predictable periods for agreed household tasks. | A nanny-housekeeper can be realistic when the duty list fits those blocks and school-run periods remain protected. |
| Older school-age children | Childcare may concentrate around mornings, after school, activities and holidays rather than the full daytime period. | A combined role can work well when daytime household management is substantial and the after-school childcare requirement is clearly defined. |

Run a workload-collision test before choosing the combined role.
- Block out fixed childcare.Mark school and nursery runs, meals, naps, classes, supervision and any periods when the children require active care.
- List the household work separately.Write cleaning, laundry, ironing, cooking, shopping and organisation as distinct recurring tasks rather than one vague “housekeeping” line.
- Find genuine household-work time.Identify the periods when those tasks can be completed without expecting simultaneous active childcare.
- Test school holidays and sick days.A combined role that only works during term time needs a clear plan for weeks when childcare expands.
- Name the role after the test.If household work remains marginal, keep the role nanny-led. If both responsibilities have realistic time, a nanny-housekeeper brief may fit.
2026 London pay evidence
Is a nanny-housekeeper cheaper than hiring a nanny?
There is no responsible title-only answer. A nanny-housekeeper is one combined job, not a discounted nanny plus housekeeper. Pay changes with hours, children’s ages, sole-charge responsibility, household scope, live-in or live-out arrangement, experience and travel requirements.
Nannytax’s 2026 payroll data reports this average for an Inner London live-out nanny.
A current Little Ones part-time Hackney nanny-housekeeper vacancy for one school-age child advertises this range. It is a vacancy example, not a market average.
An Eden Private Staff SW19 live-in housekeeper-nanny vacancy with three young children advertises this range. The duties and accommodation make it non-comparable with the hourly examples.
Do not average these figures together. They come from different evidence types and different job structures. Use them to understand the spread, then price the actual brief.
From our work
The most useful nanny-housekeeper brief makes the collision points visible before candidate search starts.
On our current nanny-housekeeper service page, we ask households to prepare five things before making an enquiry: the number and ages of the children; the property location and size; the core childcare and household duty split; the weekly schedule including school or nursery times; and the live-in or live-out working arrangement.
Those details matter because “nanny-housekeeper” can describe very different jobs. A family with a baby at home all day may have very little uninterrupted household-work time. A family with school-age children may have a substantial daytime block for laundry, cleaning, cooking or organisation before the school run. The title is the same, but the workable brief is not.
Our current service wording also makes one boundary explicit: one combined role should not become two full-time jobs. We therefore treat the priority rule as part of the brief. If a child needs active care while a household task is unfinished, the household should already know which responsibility takes priority rather than leaving the candidate to resolve an impossible conflict in real time.
This is why the role-selection conversation starts with duties and hours, not with nationality or a promise that one type of candidate can simply “do everything”.
Questions about nanny and nanny-housekeeper roles.
What is the main difference between a nanny and a nanny-housekeeper?
A nanny is childcare-led. A nanny-housekeeper has genuine childcare responsibility plus broader agreed household duties. The combined role only works when both responsibilities can fit into the weekly schedule without asking one person to perform two full workloads at the same time.
Can a nanny do some housekeeping?
Yes, where the tasks are agreed and remain compatible with a childcare-led job. Child-related meals, laundry, bedrooms, belongings and tidying can commonly sit within a nanny brief. If broader family laundry, cleaning, ironing, cooking and household organisation become substantial recurring responsibilities, define the position as a combined role.
Is a nanny-housekeeper suitable for a family with a baby?
It can be, but a baby can require long periods of direct care, which reduces uninterrupted time for household work. Start by mapping feeds, naps, outings and supervision, then keep the household duties realistic. Age alone does not decide the role; the actual care pattern and household workload do.
When does a nanny-housekeeper work particularly well?
It can work well where school or nursery creates predictable periods for household tasks, or where the childcare requirement is concentrated around specific parts of the day. The duty split, working hours and priority when both areas need attention should be written clearly.
Is a nanny-housekeeper always cheaper than hiring separate help?
No. Current market evidence varies widely by duties, hours, experience and arrangement. A combined title should not be used as a way to compress two separate full workloads into one salary. Compare the actual gross pay and total employment cost of the workable arrangements.
What should I prepare before asking Filipino Domestic Services to search?
Prepare the children’s number and ages, the property and location, the core childcare duties, the core household duties, normal days and hours, school or nursery times, live-in or live-out preference and your preferred start date. These details help define whether the role is nanny-led or genuinely combined.
Sources and evidence boundary.
Role boundaries and briefing observations come from the current Filipino Domestic Services service architecture and enquiry process. Pay figures are external market references, not FDS placement averages and not nationality-specific rates.
