Cleaner hiring guide
How to hire a reliable Filipino cleaner in London
Reliability should be tested through the individual cleaner's work history, references, availability and the clarity of the cleaning brief, not inferred from nationality. First decide whether you need to hire an individual cleaner or book a managed cleaning service, then define tasks, frequency, hours, rate basis, evidence and any trial arrangement.

How do you hire a reliable cleaner in London?
Define the recurring cleaning work, decide whether the household wants an individual domestic worker or a packaged cleaning service, compare candidates against relevant cleaning experience, follow up references, verify right to work for a direct hire and agree the rate, hours, tasks and start arrangements before work begins.
Do not use “Filipino” as a shortcut for reliability. The evidence belongs to the individual cleaner and the work they have actually done.
Seven steps to hire an individual cleaner.
Individual cleaner or cleaning service?
What should a cleaner reference confirm?
Who is giving the reference?
Confirm how the referee knows the candidate and whether they directly observed the work being discussed.
When did the cleaner work there?
Check the dates and whether the work was recurring, temporary or occasional.
What cleaning work did the person actually perform?
Ask about the property type, task list and any ironing, deep-clean detail or other relevant responsibilities.
Record verified facts separately from opinion.
Acas says references should be fair and accurate. Avoid converting a vague compliment into a factual guarantee.

From our work: the first decision is whether the household is hiring a person or buying a cleaning package.
The rebuilt FDS site deliberately separates the Filipino cleaner staffing page from the home-cleaning service network. That distinction matters because the household's responsibilities, evidence checks and conversion route are different when it is considering an individual domestic worker rather than requesting a packaged cleaning visit.
For the staffing route, we ask the household to define the work: cleaning tasks, frequency, days or hours, location, intended start date and any extras such as ironing. The candidate branch asks cleaners to describe the cleaning work they have actually done, their availability and the London areas they can realistically reach. Those two factual briefs can then be compared.
The older FDS cleaner articles used “reliable Filipino cleaner” as if nationality itself supplied the evidence. We have removed that assumption. Reliability is better tested through consistency in work history, references, communication about availability and whether the person understands and accepts the actual recurring task list.
Where the household only wants a service rather than a person-specific staffing arrangement, we route it to the separate cleaning quote. That prevents the same query from being answered by two incompatible engagement models and makes the final decision clearer before any trial or employment discussion begins.
The same distinction keeps a staffing enquiry separate from the managed cleaning-service route and its different commercial model.
Can you use a trial clean when recruiting?
Acas says an unpaid work trial should be for a reasonable amount of time and genuinely used to test whether the applicant can do the job. If the trial is longer than legitimately needed, is not observed, uses tasks outside the role or provides value beyond testing skills, minimum-wage obligations can arise. This is general employer information, not personalised legal advice.
If you want a broader household-staff trial process, use the domestic staff trial-day checklist once that stage is appropriate.
Cleaner hiring questions.
How do I find a reliable cleaner in London?
Define the work, compare relevant cleaning experience, check availability and references, and agree the recurring scope in writing. Reliability should be based on the individual's evidence and communication rather than nationality.
Should I hire a cleaner or book a cleaning service?
Hire an individual cleaner when you want a person-specific domestic staffing arrangement. Book a cleaning service when you want a defined cleaning visit or package. The two routes have different engagement structures.
What should I ask a cleaner's reference?
Confirm who the referee is, dates of work, property context and the cleaning duties actually performed. Keep verified facts separate from general opinion and use fair, role-relevant questions.
Can I ask a cleaner to do a trial?
A genuine recruitment trial should be proportionate and used to assess the job skills. If it provides ordinary productive work beyond what is reasonably needed for recruitment, minimum-wage obligations can arise.
Does a cleaner need a DBS check?
DBS eligibility depends on the role and the level of check. Do not assume every household cleaner is eligible for an enhanced check. Use the dedicated background-check guide and current GOV.UK eligibility tools.
Are Filipino cleaners more reliable?
Nationality does not establish reliability. Assess the individual cleaner's work history, references, communication, availability, right to work and understanding of the actual cleaning brief.
Sources and engagement boundary.
The cleaner-vs-service distinction follows the FDS topical architecture. Recruitment-trial and reference statements use current Acas and GOV.UK guidance.
Choose the engagement route, then verify the individual evidence.
Keep person-specific hiring separate from the packaged cleaning-service journey.
